The Geographer

The Geographer is an oil painting on canvas by Johannes Vermeer, signed and dated 1669 (MDCLXVIIII) on the back wall, and held by the Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main, which acquired it in 1885.

A young scholar in a loose, Japanese-style robe of the kind then fashionable among learned men leans over a chart on the table, dividers in his right hand, and looks up toward the window as if struck by a thought. Around him are the tools of his trade: a terrestrial globe published by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam in 1618, a cross-staff hanging by the window, rolled charts and books, and on the wall a sea chart of Europe's coasts identified as one published by Willem Jansz. Blaeu. Technical study shows that Vermeer moved the head, turned the dividers from vertical to horizontal and removed a sheet of paper from the stool at lower right. The painted surface measures 51.6 × 45.4 cm.

The picture is closely linked to The Astronomer in the Louvre: the same model in the same robe, a matching celestial globe by the Hondius firm, and, according to a 2017 study, canvas cut from the same bolt. Arthur Wheelock and others have proposed that the model was Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, the Delft-born microscopist who passed his surveyor's examination in 1669 and was later named trustee of Vermeer's estate, though no document links the two men during the painter's life.

The two paintings were sold together in Rotterdam on 27 April 1713 and stayed together until 1797, when they were sold separately in Amsterdam. The Geographer later belonged to Isaac Pereire in Paris and to Prince Demidoff at San Donato near Florence before it was bought at a Vienna sale in 1885 for the Städel. In 1997 it was shown beside The Astronomer at the Louvre and the Städel, the first time the pair had been reunited since their separation.
