Artist Biography
Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter born in Delft in 1632, known for his exquisite use of light and color. His works, which often depicted intimate domestic scenes, were not widely recognized during his lifetime. Vermeer began his artistic career as an apprentice and later became a master of the Delft Guild of Saint Luke. He was influenced by Caravaggio's chiaroscuro and the work of other Dutch masters. Despite creating only around 36 paintings, several of which, such as 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' and 'The Milkmaid,' are considered masterpieces, his legacy has only grown over the centuries. Vermeer’s meticulous attention to detail and innovative techniques have inspired countless artists and continue to resonate in the art world today.
