The Amalfi Coast viewed from Convento dei cappuccini

The Amalfi Coast viewed from Convento dei cappuccini is an oil on canvas by the Danish landscape painter Carl Frederik Aagaard, signed and dated 1894; its present location is not recorded, and it was last sold at Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen in 2025.

Aagaard, born in Odense in 1833, moved to Copenhagen in 1852, studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and trained as a landscape painter under P. C. Skovgaard, while also working for much of his career as a decorative painter in public buildings. He travelled to Italy for long stays in 1870–71 and 1875–76 and afterwards painted Italian scenery on a large scale. He became a member of the Academy in 1874, a Knight of the Dannebrog in 1879 and a titular professor in 1892. Many of his subjects were places popular with travellers.

The view from the vine-covered loggia of the Capuchin convent at Amalfi was one he returned to several times. The first version dates from 1873, and another, very similar canvas includes two figures in the loggia. This late repetition, painted the year before his death, leaves the pergola empty: a shaded walk of whitewashed pillars and trailing vines opens on the right onto the town, the cliffs of the coast and the sea.

The canvas measures 66 by 87 cm and is signed and dated C.F. Aagaard 1894 at lower right. It has appeared at auction several times: at Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen in 2014, and again at the same house on 8 May 2025, when it sold for 70,000 Danish kroner.
