The Siesta

Art Appreciation

Sunlight bathes the scene, casting a warm glow on the figures depicted. The composition feels intimate, inviting the viewer to observe a moment of quiet repose. Three women, rendered with Gauguin's signature simplified forms, are the focus. One reclines languidly on a surface, her form echoing the gentle curve of the horizon visible in the background; she is bathed in orange. Another sits, back to the viewer, her form is defined by a large hat casting a shadow over her face. A third, dressed in a pink garment, sits in the background, and a fourth woman attends to something in the background. The artist’s use of broad, flat areas of color, devoid of excessive detail, is striking. The wood planks of the platform they rest on are arranged, guiding the eye towards the background landscape.
