Fantastic Vision (Asmodea) (from The Black Paintings)

Art Appreciation

In this haunting vision, two ghostly figures hover ominously above a dim, restless landscape. Their forms, swirling in expressive strokes of dark and muted colors, exude a surreal and mysterious energy that captures a moment caught between dream and nightmare. The central figure dressed in a dark cloak directs an accusatory or commanding gesture while the figure enveloped in a flowing red cloak seems to stride purposefully beside them. Beneath, a crowd of small, nearly indistinct silhouettes appears caught in a tumultuous gathering or ritual, their motion blurred and shadowy.

Executed with Goya’s signature loose and painterly brushwork, the composition is both chaotic and controlled; the palette is dominated by earthy browns, blacks, and smoky blues that evoke dusk or a spectral twilight. The vague shapes and flickering humans merge with the brooding sky and a looming rock formation, conjuring feelings of foreboding and supernatural dread. Created in a period of deep personal turmoil and Spain’s political instability, this work from the famed Black Paintings series captures the artist’s bleak meditation on human folly, fear, and the irrational forces overshadowing reality.
